  311. INTRODUCTION 
  312.   This digitally compiled map includes geology, geologic provinces, and 
  313.       oil and gas fields of South Asia.  The map is part of a worldwide series 
  314.       on CD-ROM by the World Energy Project of the U.S. Geological Survey. The 
  315.       goal of the project 
  316.       is to assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas 
  317.       resources of the world,  and to report these results by the year 2000. For 
  318.       data management purposes the world is divided into eight energy regions 
  319.       corresponding 
  320.       approximately to the economic regions of the world as defined by the U.S. 
  321.       Department of State. South Asia (Region 8) includes Afghanistan, 
  322.       Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri 
  323.       Lanka. 
  324.       Each region is then further divided into geologic provinces on the basis 
  325.       of natural geologic entities and may include a dominant structural element 
  326.       or a number of contiguous elements. Some provinces contain multiple 
  327.       genetically related basins. 
  328.       Geologic province boundaries for South Asia are delineated using data from 
  329.       a number of geologic maps, and other tectonic and geographic data (see 
  330.       References). Offshore province boundaries are defined by the 4000-meter 
  331.       bathymetric contour on the Alantic coast and the 2000-meter bathymetric 
  332.       contour on the Pacific coast. Each province is assigned a unique number; 
  333.       the first digit is the region number.  It is attempted to number the 
  334.       provinces in geographical groups; onshore, offshore, and combined on and 
  335.       offshore.  The list of the provinces sorted by Code is shown in Adobe 
  336.       Acrobat region8.pdf file. 
  337.       Oil and gas field data from Petroconsultants International Data 
  338.       Corporation worldwide oil and gas field database are allocated to these 
  339.       provinces.  The geologic provinces are being further subdivided into 
  340.       petroleum systems and assessment units in order to appraise the 
  341.       undiscovered petroleum potential of selected provinces of the world. 
  342.       Specific details of the data sources and map compilation are given in the 
  343.       metadata files (MAP_META, GEO8, PROV8 and PROVWRLD) on this CD-ROM. 
  344.       Smaller stratigraphic subdivisions of Phanerozoic rock are combined to 
  345.       simplify the map and to maintain consistency with other maps of the 
  346.       series. Precambrian rocks are undivided.  Oil and gas field markers 
  347.       represent field center-points published with permission from 
  348.       Petroconsultants International Data Corp., 1996 database. 
  349.       This map is compiled using Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. 
  350.       (ESRI) ARC/INFO software.  Political boundaries and cartographic 
  351.       representations are based on ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M digital coverages, and 
  352.       used with permission from ESRI (attachment B).  These same features are 
  353.       used for general reference only and have no political significance.

  533.             Processing Steps and List of Geologic Provinces.  The maps can be 
  534.             zoomed and panned. The software needed to view this file is included 
  535.             on this disk.

  656.       installation program, aeclient.exe, is found in the ARCEXPLR directory at

  669.       ESRI's Arcview 3.x is used to create the U.S. Geological Survey Arcview 
  670.       Project.  Note ArcView software is not supplied on this CD-ROM. 
  671.       There are two versions of the Arcview project found on this disk. Both can 
  672.       be found in the directory STH_ASIA/VIEWS.  The first, reg8.apr, can be 
  673.       viewed on any platform where Arcview 3.x is already installed.  Some 
  674.       modifications to your system, explained below, are suggested.  The second, 
  675.       reg8_pc.apr, can be viewed on Windows 95/98/NT platforms without any 
  676.       modification.

  678.        If the operating system is Windows 95/98/NT, access the project 
  679.       reg8_pc.apr in the directory STH_ASIA/VIEWS.  
  680.       If another operating system is used, an environmental variable, AVDATA08, 
  681.       must be defined  in order to optimally access the ArcView project located 
  682.       in the directory STH_ASIA/VIEWS.  For a more comprehensive discussion see 
  683.       the install text file in STH_ASIA/VIEWS. 
  684.       On a Macintosh platform modify the "startup" file in the Preferences 
  685.       folder of the System folder to include:System.SetEnvVar ("AVDATA08",
